As Far As the Eye Can See!

I’m easily fooled I must confess,

Sitting in front of a screen undressed,

A day outside—a scene hard-pressed,

All the while I miss the jest.

I take my mind I walk outside,

Just the matter of being in stride,

I stroll past those who prefer to ride,

Nothing quite like it I must abide.

Stretch the gaze beyond the glass,

Probably enough to push past the farce,

Finding it hard to complete the parse,

What is it about this we can’t quite grasp?

Coming toward me, reporting true,

As I look admiring the view,

Taking my time the custom due,

Looking as far as the eye can see too.

The out-of-doors oh so great,

None of us together just can wait,

The larger world, a resplendent state,

Come on now, make it a date!

We miss so much of life glued to a computer screen. Not only that, our poor eyes struggle to look on but a few inches away for much of life. Most of my work life I must confess is bound to keyboard and screen.

Could it be that our vision—both physically and spiritually—needs to be stretched?

One day recently, I found a sort of soul-sickness creeping up, over and on me. I wondered for a while, why? When I thought about it for an hour longer and it got no better, I just had that urge to get outside.

A hot day is was. Fortunately we (presently) live close to the beach and so I went for a little cooling exercise—20 minutes of breast-stroke in the loquacious water. I always find exercise makes me feel better.

It was only on the way home that I had the concept dropped firmly into my conscious thinking: “as far as the eye can see.”

How wonderful to engage the eyes on the broader world, removing the anchors and setting spiritual sail!
